Whether it’s the early morning rush, an afternoon haste or you’re in an evening hustle, you’ll say the thing we all do when things get hectic: “I don’t have time to make a healthy meal.”
Fear no more with these healthy eating hacks.
It’s a throw your clothes on, tussle your hair neat, run out the door kinda day. Whether it’s the early morning rush, an afternoon haste or an evening hustle, you’ll say the thing we all do when things get hectic: “I don’t have time to make a healthy meal.”
Though just as we all have our own time hacks for things like putting our makeup on, making the quickest cup of coffee or making sure our socks match (I need that last one, let me tell ya!) there are also time hacks for making sure you’re staying nourished– even in a haste.
Here are three of my go-to speedy eats that are as quick to put together as they are to inhale*—possibly over the kitchen sink. *Just don’t literally inhale. Chewing is key.
1. Prepare a pocket:
Got a tortilla shell, large Swiss chard leaves, good quality bread, or a bell pepper? Then you have it all (almost)! When I want something savory, and quick on-the-go, I’ll grab one of the above vessels and fill it with hummus, avocado, sprouts, nuts, seeds, salt, pepper or anything spreadable and toss-in-able my heart desires. Try using a hollowed pepper, smear in some hummus, avocado, toss in a little torn kale, almonds, and drizzle with a bit of olive oil, sprinkled with salt. It takes less than 120 seconds to make and makes for way healthier (and cheaper) eats than swinging through the drive-thru.
2. The Banana Boat:
Okay, I admit, this one I got from my little nieces. But they say there’s a lot of wisdom in children and I think that totally applies to this quick meal-time fix. All you need is a banana and something smearable. Step one: peel your banana. Step two: smear on your favorite nut butter. That was fast! So fast, in fact, there is enough time for optional step three: sprinkle on some shredded coconut, crushed peanuts, dried fruit or anything else you want to pile onto your banana boat! The peel even works as a compostable container for easy transport.
Don’t love bananas? Slice an apple in half, scoop out the core and use it in the same vain! If my nieces can do it, you can do it too.
3. Let Mother (Nature) make it:
This is the easiest hack I have and, even though it’s so simple, we often forget about it. However whole plant-based foods are often always ready to eat and easy to grab on the go. Scoop up an apple and some whole nuts, gnaw down on a cucumber and a bag of trail mix, or open up an avocado and sprinkle on a little sea salt and pepper. In fact, made with nothing but whole food ingredients, sometimes the easiest choice is shaking up a serving of Vega One or Vega Essentials with a little plant-based milk and ice in a mason jar to get all the good stuff you need even on the go. Mother Nature always has our backs like that.
So before you assume you just don’t have time to eat healthy when you need to hustle, remember that you have the capability to apply the same time-hack skills to your food as you do anything else. Except maybe how to make sure your socks match. That skill is still a mystery to me!
Give these a go and hey, if you have any eat well time hacks of your own, please share them! The community that lives their best lives together, is a pretty darn happy one.
