An exciting and challenging position exists as a Product Development, Sr. Manager at Vega. Reporting to the Senior Director, R&I, this role will lead the Research and Innovation team at Vega to support the growth and product development initiatives of new Vega products. In this role you will directly contribute to consumer centered design and technical viability assessment to support a robust innovation pipeline to drive the Vega brand.

This role is open to applicants within the US or within Canada.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the Product Development team;
  • Build a positive culture, foster growth and inspire and motivate a high-performing team
  • Coach and build capabilities across your team in new product and category development, and technology innovation to assure industry leading excellence in product development
  • Create and develop new products, rapid prototype, and establish a robust growth and technology roadmap pipeline
  • Manage innovation and development projects to meet launch timeline, commercial viability, and cost vs target
  • Participate in leadership meetings, including stage gate, and provide input in the overall brand strategies
  • Manage resources and resource allocations including budget management
  • Lead the design of next generation consumer-desired products
  • Advance business through technical excellence ensuring all aspects meet and exceed the quality and product performance requirements within a managed timeline and cost objective
  • Mitigate input costs and enhance margins through joined up cost leadership programs
  • Partner with Marketing and commercial leaders to set and activate product development and innovation pipeline for the brand
  • Partner with Regulatory, Quality and Food Safety to ensure product compliance
  • Orchestrate work to deliver technical programs across innovation, manufacturing, quality, and costs
  • Facilitate and provide the necessary input in developing project brief, development of technical requirements and project timelines
  • Build strong relationships with suppliers and co-man partnerships

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science or Engineering or closely related field required. Post-graduate degree preferred
  • 5 – 7 years of experience in an innovation product development role within the food industry or the natural health product/dietary supplement industry
  • 3+ years of experience managing and leading a high-performing team is required
  • Hands on experience and competency in the formulation and commercialization of food products or natural health products/dietary supplements required
  • Familiar with the Canadian Food & Drug Acts and Regulation and FDA regulations for Food and Dietary Supplements (DSHEA)
  • Adept understanding of sensory, consumer, analytical and physical testing methodologies in plant-based food & beverages
  • Experience working with a variety of co-manufacturers, suppliers and vendors
  • Strong commercial acumen, technical development skills, judgment and understanding of the business and industry
  • Experience and understanding of food forward consumer trends, including culinary as well as technical experience with non-gmo, organic, and/or clean-label food design
  • Technical competency in non-dairy, plant-based food science & innovation and ingredient functionality
  • Experience and passion for creativity and innovation, including consumer-centric approaches
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Self-starter, with strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work cross-functionally and interact with management at a senior leadership level
  • A creative mind-set with the ability to think outside of the box
  • Position requires the ability to travel as needed, including to USA and Canada on short notice
  • Must be able to work in Canada with a current PR status
