Accounting Supervisor - 9 month contract

An exciting and challenging contract position exists as a full-time Accounting Supervisor at Vega. In this role, you will assist and support the Accounting Manager to achieve Finance departmental goals and contribute to business decision making. You will be responsible for the day to day operations of the Accounting department, while supervising a team of three, with the primary objective of producing timely, accurate and reliable financial information in an efficient and effective manner.

This position is located at Vega’s HQ in Burnaby, BC. During the exceptional circumstances due to COVID-19, we are currently working virtually while our office remains open for access.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for timely and accurate monthly financial internal and external reporting
  • Analyze finance information and provide Operations and Finance department managers with P&L variance report
  • Ensure accurate and appropriate recording and analysis of expenses in accordance with IFRS and Vega’s Accounting Manual
  • Intercompany transaction reconciliation
  • Prepare month end standard, provisional, and reclass journal entries
  • Prepare inventory provision worksheet and journal entry
  • Perform and review monthly balance sheet reconciliation
  • Review and approve purchase orders
  • Resolve accounting discrepancies and irregularities
  • Provide support to budgeting and forecasting activities
  • Prepare Ad hoc reporting as assigned


  • Oversee the accurate processing of Accounts Payable invoices and payments
  • Ensure intercompany fund transfers are processed
  • Prepare monthly cashflow report



    • Ensure timely and accurate governance filings
    • Assist with providing info for annual tax reporting

Internal Control

    • Ensures that Internal Controls are adhered to through periodic audits of transactions
    • Ensure team’s SOPs are up to date and in compliance
    • Ensure invoice approvals are aligned with the Delegation of Authority
    • Review/approve purchase orders to ensure they are aligned entered correctly from an accounting standpoint
    • Assist with Audit requests as assigned

Business Optimization 

  • Suggest business process improvements and efficiencies
  • Execute and implement the strategic and tactical business plans and initiatives
  • Support Accounting Manager with special projects and workflow process improvements

Team Leadership

  • Responsible for coaching and developing three Vegatopians (employees)
  • Responsible for managing the Payroll Coordinator
  • Responsible for setting and reviewing quarterly goals and annual performance
  • Lead efforts in improving team productivity and efficiencies
  • Motivate staff, celebrate achievements and ensure a positive work atmosphere is maintained
  • Provide recommendations on staffing requirements and issues
  • Drive process improvements through development of key metrics, implementation of efficient tools and continuing optimization of staff
  • Live and teach Vega’s core values through leading by example

Skills and Qualifications

  • Professional Accounting Designation or near completion: CPA, CA, CMA, or CGA
  • Minimum of 3 years progressive Accounting experience in a public company environment preferred
  • Experience working collaboratively with an Operations Inventory team
  • Supervisory experience managing a high-performing team
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of IFRS
  • Strong MS Excel skills
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills, both oral and written
  • Innovative problem solving skills and flexible mind-set
  • Detail oriented, highly organized and able to work independently
  • Self-starter, dependable and possessing the ability to respond quickly and accurately on multiple priorities
  • Ability to identify issues / control weaknesses and develop and implement recommendations for resolution
  • Ability to work cross functionally to solve problems
